The Wild Salmon Center is a $8M multi-national organization with a staff of 35. The Organization has operations in the Russian Far East, Kamchatka, the Olympic Peninsula, and on the Oregon North Coast, and on the John Day and Umpqua Rivers. The home office is located in Portland, Oregon in the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center with satellite offices in Port Angeles, WA; and in Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia.

Director of Western Pacific Programs

Reports to: Executive Vice President

Position Summary

The Director of Western Pacific Programs is responsible for the development, day-to-day leadership and management of the Organization's programs in Russia and Japan, including regional conservation programs, Russian federal policy initiatives, and Wild Salmon Center's Sustainable Fisheries Program. The Director of Western Pacific Programs serves on the Organization's Management Team to provide philosophical, strategic and operational direction for WSC. The Director of Western Pacific Programs reports to the Executive Vice President, and supervises the Sustainable Fisheries Program Manager, the Sakhalin Conservation Program Manager and the Kamchatka Conservation Program Manager.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced conservation professional with a demonstrated track record of leadership success. This individual will be mission-driven, and will have significant experience leading teams and managing multiple projects. The successful candidate will possess highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to negotiate, influence, and collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders. Professional experience working in Russia is essential, preferably in the Russian Far East. Fluency in Russian language and culture, and English language/American culture are essential.

Responsibilities

The Director of Western Pacific Programs:

  • Establishes and monitors performance measures for Western Pacific programs and projects; provides regular updates to the Management Team, the Executive Vice President, and the President/CEO.
  • Participates on the Management Team to provide philosophical, strategic and operational direction for the Organization.
  • Provides professional guidance and feedback to, and performs annual performance evaluations of, Western Pacific program directors and managers. Ensures Western Pacific program staff receives opportunities for professional development.
  • Collaborates with the Development team to raise funds in support of Western Pacific and other WSC programs. Develops and enhances positive foundation, corporate, governmental, and individual donor relationships.
  • Represents the Organization in policy, legislative and other public and private forums as a primary spokesperson.
  • Ensures coordination of collaborative projects and communications involving Western Pacific programs within the Organization and with WSC conservation partners.

Key Qualifications

  • Ten years professional experience in conservation or related field; or Master's degree in conservation or natural resource management plus seven years of professional experience.
  • Experience working internationally, especially in Russia, is essential; work in the Russian Far East preferred.
  • Fluency in Russian language and culture required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English and facility in American culture.
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role within a natural resource/conservation organization, and developing and implementing environmental conservation (or similar) programs.
  • Strong and demonstrated interest in conservation issues and the public interest.
  • Superb personnel and administrative management skills, including goal and priority setting, staff supervision and motivation, project management, budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing demands while ensuring high quality and timely work.
  • Comfortable using industry standard software programs.
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively (35%+ of time) between the United States, the Russian Far East, and Moscow, Russia.

Sakhalin Program Manager

Reports to: Director of Western Pacific Programs

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Western Pacific Programs, the Sakhalin Program Manager is responsible for providing general program management and leadership for Wild Salmon Center initiatives on Sakhalin. This includes development and oversight of an approximately $1.7 million annual budget and work plan, participation in strategic planning, managing program staff and serving as a lead contact for US and Russian partners.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated program management skills and a strong understanding of Russian culture and the intricacies of working in the Russian Federation. This individual must also have the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and possess excellent communications skills.

Responsibilities

  • Together with the Director of Western Pacific Programs, development and implement conservation strategies and annual work plan
  • Prepare and administer annual budget
  • Work closely with US and Russian colleagues, partners and grant recipients
  • Participate in grant writing and fundraising activities
  • Prepare program updates for WSC Management and Board of Directors
  • Oversee the planning and management of outside events such as local meetings, inter-organizational strategy sessions and regional workshops
  • Represent WSC at events in Russia and the United States.

Key Qualifications

  • Strong Russian language skills, both written and verbal required
  • Graduate degree in related field (conservation science, fisheries science, environmental science, environmental policy and management, business administration, public policy, etc) and/or bachelor's degree with relevant experience preferred
  • Demonstrated success in program management, including budget and work planning
  • Ability to develop strong and constructive relationships with regional NGOs, government agencies, scientists, and community and political leaders
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal

Education

Master's degree with a preference for degree in a relevant field, or Bachelor's degree with relevant experience.

Travel and Hours of Work

The position is based in Portland, Oregon and will require travel to the Russian Far East, including approximately four trips to Sakhalin Island annually. Periodic travel within the United States may also be required.

Grants and Finance Coordinator

Reports to: Director of Grant Programs

Position Summary

Working in close collaboration with WSC's Development and Western Pacific Program teams, this position is responsible for the timely development and submission of high quality grant proposals and reports for WSC's programs in the Russian Far East and Japan, as well as working with Russian partner organizations to build their fundraising capacity, and supporting program planning and financial management. The ideal candidate will have Russian language fluency and a strong understanding of Russian culture, as well as significant grant proposal writing and program development experience. This individual must also have the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and possess excellent time management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and submit high quality grant proposals, budgets and reports (narrative and financial) for WSC's Western Pacific programs while adhering to deadlines and making efficient use of program staff time.
  • Build and support grant seeking and management capacity within Russian partner organizations.
  • Identify and research prospective funders, working closely with program directors and managers to understand funding needs and recognize appropriate opportunities.
  • Participate in program planning for Western Pacific programs and planning processes with Russian partners; promote alignment between planning and fundraising processes and content.
  • Assist in managing sub-grants to Russian partner organizations, ensuring that they are being developed in accordance with the grant agreements in place with WSC's grantors as well as with current project planning, and that sub-grant reports are complete and useful for fulfilling WSC internal and external reporting obligations
  • Provide expense coding and budget management support to the Western Pacific team to facilitate accurate and efficient financial reporting.
  • Maintain accurate and complete electronic files on the Wild Salmon Center server and database records in Raiser's Edge, including a system to track proposals and reports, and contacts with funders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications

  • Russian language fluency (spoken and written) and cultural competence required.
  • At least two years of successful grant proposal writing and/or grant management experience, and a strong understanding of principles and practices of fundraising strongly preferred.
  • Budgeting experience and good understanding of financial accounting for non-profit organizations preferred.
  • Proven success in simultaneously managing multiple projects, large and small, while ensuring high performance standards and adherence to deadlines.
  • Exceptional communications skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proactive, creative, strategic thinker with strong problem-solving ability.
  • Effective team player with a demonstrated collaborative working style.

Photography Archive Volunteer Intern

Reports to: Design and Marketing Coordinator

Position Summary

Photos are one of Wild Salmon Center’s greatest assets. In a moment, a photo can help tell our story; it can communicate the beauty of wild salmon, the essential services nature provides and the tragedy of loss.
To help us organize and make better use of our photos, we are looking for a volunteer photography intern. This position is unpaid.

Responsibilities

  • Update WSC’s existing digital asset management tool (image library) by maintaining image rights in library, removing duplicates, identifying and correcting inaccurate captions, adding captions, keywords and copyright information where appropriate and uploading images into the image library.
  • The photography intern will also be asked to provide feedback on the functionality of the image library to be incorporated into future improvements.

Key Qualifications

  • Some digital photography experience required
  • Fairly high degree of comfort with computers and technology required
  • Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Bridge
  • A self-starter and team player

Wild Salmon Center Will Provide:

Volunteer Receptionist/Administrative Intern

Reports to: Human Resources and Office Manager

Position Summary

The Volunteer Receptionist/Administrative Assistant will help to leverage staff time and keep Wild Salmon Center’s office running. This position is unpaid.

Responsibilities

  • Answer phone (provide information as able, refer callers to appropriate staff members or take messages as necessary, and check voice mail periodically)
  • Greet visitors to office (provide information as able, refer questions to appropriate staff members)
  • Open and distribute incoming mail, prepare outgoing mail, prepare outgoing UPS/FedEx packages, assist with mailing projects
  • Restock maps and printed materials
  • Keep copy areas tidy, distribute incoming faxes, restock paper
  • Order office supplies
  • Filing
  • Miscellaneous data entry, word processing, etc. as available
  • Ensure public areas in office are tidy (conference room, central table, etc.)
  • Feed the fish
  • Other projects assigned

Qualifications

  • Front desk/reception/administrative support experience required
  • Knowledge of and comfort using Word, Outlook, Excel
  • Knowledge Raiser’s Edge a plus
  • A self-starter and team player
