Good and Bad News for River and Estuarine Dolphins

Irrawaddy dolphins, once thought to be on the brink of extinction, are more abundant than previously thought...

The Wildlife Conservation Society and Chittagong University in Bangladesh conducted surveys along the regions coast lines and river deltas with improved methodologies and generated a new estimate of ~6000 Irrawaddy dolphins which is the largest known single population of the species.

Bad News for the Mexican porpoise however. The Colorado River barely has enough water for Oranges, Golf Courses, Industry, People, AND Porpoises. It might go the way of the Yangtze River Dolphin which is presumed extinct. At least the Mexican Porpoise is not used as bait or rounded up and slaughtered.

What is most amazing is the dolphins that aid fishermen in Myanmar by rounding the fish up into the nets!
